Soul Distortion Reviews
I received this book free from Elicia at www.wanderingsagepublications.com and through Goodreads First Reads. My first ARC, forgetting the synopsis, I looked at the cover and thought what a great picture for a YA paranormal book. Whoops!!!! I felt the fear building before finishing the first paragraph. The tension continued to mount with the twin sister's nighttime extra-curricular activities, the mysterious life destroying event from their past, deaths that may or may not be murders, and then there are the stories that gram gram told them before she died. Good and evil, can anyone tell which is which? What a great horror story! The author's wordplay had me feeling the emotions of every character driving me on and not letting me escape. I am forever trapped at this author's mercy.
I received this novel for free in a give away from good reads. I was intrigued by the cover and spent the next hour in the midst of an intense story that shocked me with every twist and turn that it took. The ending was truly not something I saw coming when I started this novel. Getting sucked into the world with November and December I felt as if I was there watching every move. The flashbacks and the present worked to create a story filled with revenge and suspense.
Bad. Really bad. I couldn't get beyond the horrible writing and grammatical errors.
Excerpt from Soul Distortion: She couldn't see it, but every inch of her felt the supernatural bloom of collapsing time and space. A light wind blew across her face, yet the leaves in the trees did not move. She stood frozen for a millisecond as she thought of her grandmother's warnings about nighttime and what could happen if you were caught alone.“There are things out there girls, terrible things, just waiting, watching, and biding their time until they can pounce. Mark my words girls, they will pounce, and there will be nothing you can do to stop them. So take heed, and try to understand what is and what isn't evil. ”She shivered and remained statuesque until the first tree bowed and the branches cracked and howled in the wind, which suddenly arose up from the twilight abyss of the restless park. December forced herself to get moving. Every tiny sound, whether real or illusion, made her jump and caused her heart to stop, then pound painfully against her ribcage as if it must break free. With each step and sound of rustling leaves, her chest grew heavier, her legs stiffer, and an irrationality of what could be following her developed. She made it halfway down the south portion of the park until she reached the trail that wrapped around the entire backside. She didn't want to go down the path, it was much darker, the trees thicker, yet it would get her home much faster.
November and December Webb are sister's with one mission and one goal, make the world a better place, but how they get there they somehow can't agree on. This book is full of suspense, twists and turns, and dare I say a little bit of horror. Though not officially a supernatural book, the twins have mastered astral projection, which only adds to the intrege. The people of this small town are being hunted down, the mystery grows, as the twins get closer and closer to finding the truth. A surprise ending, and must read
I know giving a book five stars means that it has to be near perfect...but really I like to think of five stars as a book I enjoyed reading and couldn't put down. This is that book. I picked it up and read it in two sittings. Something about the characters made me feel part of the story, like I was there. I imagined what it must have been like in a small town when your friends end up missing and all signs point to you being the killer. I recomend this book if you like thrillers mixed with a hint of horror.
